Pharaoh’s Curse (1957) Film Locations

Lee Sholem directed this 1957 horror movie. The tag-line – “A blood-lusting mummy that kills for a cat-goddess!” – is what sold the movie to me.

The last time I was camping in Death Valley, I took these comparison shots.

Pharaohs Curse Film Location Death Valley

Zabriskie Point is a must stop on any Death Valley trip with an easily accessible road and parking area off of Highway 190. The distinct erosional landscape is part of the 110 mile Amargosa mountain range. This area is named after Christina Zabriskie a vice-president of the Pacific Coast Borax Company. The area pops up in Rocketship X-M, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, two Twilight Zone episodes, and of course on the album of U2’s Joshua Tree.

Pharaohs Curse Film Location Death Valley

I highly recommend the book “Where Monsters Walked – California Locations of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, 1925-1965” by Gail Orwig and Robert Orwig. I wished I had this book on me when I went out to Death Valley. I had stopped at Twenty Mule Team Canyon and Stovepipe Wells for other movie shots (Star Wars, Robinson Crusoe on Mars), didn’t realize Pharaoh’s Curse, also, had scenes filmed in those locales.

Film Location

Zabriskie Point, Death Valley National Park, California. There is a well marked sign and turn-off from CA-190 that leads to a parking lot.
