Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden – Tarzan Day 2018

My oldest kiddo shoved the monthly LA Arboretum members magazine in my face and asked to attend an upcoming nature walk. She had a great time at the Arboretum’s summer camp and her interest in nature and the outdoors had only improved since. I strongly encourage people to become members any chance provided. We’ve been members since moving to the San Gabriel Valley. But, what piqued my curiosity was the front cover and the listing of first annual Tarzan Day at the Arboretum.

I am a Tarzan fan. My father gave me the Edgar Rice Burroughs books in Jr. High and I read through them all. With the wifey out of town the weekend of the event, I invited my father to attend. In preparation I sat the kiddos down to watch a Johnny Weissmuller movie. The movie bored them. And, they complained about the movie being in black and white. I countered by showing them the Disney cartoon. I still did not win them over.

Saturday arrived and the first item on our itinerary was the movie tour. Turnout was huge for the tours. I let the kiddos bring earphones and their music devices knowing they would get bored. When the guide pointed out the area which was Paradise Island in the Wonder Woman television show, the kiddos listened. We covered a large area of the garden and my father and I made a list of movies we would need to watch.

After the tour, a lunch break at the Peacock Café was in order. My kiddos love the Café. And, I have to admit their version of patty melt is delicious.

Afterwards, we wandered over to the animal show. The kiddos are suckers for animal shows. They sat engrossed for over an hour.  The animal presenter did an excellent job. With the animal show over, we walked around the various craft booths and took a couple funny pictures.

Eventually made our way into the auditorium, the kiddos sat down and watched part of a Tarzan film, while my father and I perused the movie poster exhibition. Then as only a grandfather would do, he let his grandchildren pick out some Tarzan related items from the vendors.

By then the kiddos were ready to call it a day, and we headed home. Overall, a good Tarzan day.
