Incubus Film Locations

Incubus (1966) Film Locations

Esperanto!

Incubus was filmed at Mission San Antonio de Padua. I had the chance to visit when I took the family on a trip to visit all the missions. It is considered one of the most remote of all the missions and probably the least visited. During our day at the mission, not a single other person visited. I can see why Leslie Stevens chose the location.

The movie has some notoriety besides being done in Esperanto. Leslie was concerned the script would prevent him from being able to film at the mission, so he concocted a phony script – a documentary called Religious Legends of Old Monterey. Still done completely in Esperanto, but cutting out all that satanic and demon mumbo jumbo that the church might have frowned upon.

The mission was founded on July 14, 1771, and was the third mission founded in Alta California by Father Junípero Serra. The mission is surrounded by the Fort Hunter Liggett Military Reservation.

I recently reviewed the IMDB and all the actors and actresses in the film have passed away except for William Shatner. Some have suggested the film is cursed. Ann Atmar committed suicide right before the October USA release of the film in 1966. Milos Milos shot and killed Barbara Ann Thomason (stage name Carolyn Mitchell) who he was having an affair with and then turned the gun on himself.

In addition, the film was considered “lost” for years and only found in France in 1996. From that print a new master was created

When I was in undergrad, I remember seeing a 1 unit course on learning Esperanto. If I only I had the forethought.
