I, Madman (1989) Film Locations

I am a fan of I, Madman. Tibor Takacs 1989 horror movie about mousey bookstore clerk Virginia, played by Jenny Wright, who becomes obsessed with the author Malcolm Brand and his book “I, Madman”.

Jenny Wright is fantastic in the movie. Her acting career spanned the early 80s to the mid-90s. Her career was short and until now this was her last leading role. It appears she stepped away from the industry at some point. She did an interview with Greg Gilbert on Python’s Paradise in 2016 that can be found on YouTube. Interesting interview about her career.

Eventually, I had to track down some of the locations from the film.

Virginia is taking the bus home from a busy day at the bookstore. The intersection is Ivar and Hollywood Blvd. The bus stop is on Ivar right next to the Guaranty Building.

Later on, Virginia learns about the death of her classmate from acting class from a newspaper headline. She’s near the intersection of Hollywood Blvd and North Highland. The Hollywood First National Bank Building is in the background.

Virginia heads back to Hollywood to locate the publisher of Malcom Brand’s books. This has her strolling down Hollywood Blvd and eventually back to the Guaranty Building.

The Guaranty Building was built in 1923 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is currently owned by the Church of Scientology.

Later on, Virginia is waiting as a bust stop again. She does a lot of waiting at bus stops in this movie. But, Malcom Brand is out and goes after another friend from acting class. Instead of Hollywood, the location is in downtown Los Angeles.

This intersection, also, appeared in Universal’s 1941 production Never Give A Sucker An Even Break features starring W.C. Fields.

Eventually, the police work with Virginia and attempt to corner Malcom Brand at the Pasadena Public Library.

You can visit several of the locations with walk along Hollywood Blvd. The Guaranty Building is at 6331 Hollywood Blvd. The Hollywood First National Bank Building is at 6777 Hollywood Blvd. The Vine Theatre is 6321 Hollywood Blvd.

The downtown Los Angeles bus stop scene is at 7th and Santa Fe.

Pasadena Public Library is located at 285 E. Walnut St. in Pasadena.
