Fish Head Rocks of Trona

Fish Head Rocks

I thought they were dragons.

My kids thought they were crocodiles.

We were all wrong.  They are the Fish Head Rocks of Trona (or Ridgecrest).

Returning to Ridgecrest after a hike at the Trona Pinnacles, we came across this spectacular roadside attraction.  We had to stop.  Sipping colas and chewing on sandwiches, we gazed with wonderment at the Fish Heads.

They are easy to spot on the north side of Highway 178 between Ridgecrest and Trona Pinnacles.

They are known as “Whale Rocks” or “Fish Head Rocks” and the local history states the paint was originally added in the 1930s.

The following website has a more in-depth history lesson for those inclined.
