Bubba Ho-Tep (2003) Film Locations

Considering an old age home for your parents? Thinking that Downey, California looks just as fine as east Texas? Well, this home serves the likes of Elvis Presley and President Kennedy. Yes, the rumors about a pistol packing mummy who sucks souls is true, but no place is perfect.

This gem based on a short story by the talented Joe R. Lansdale and directed by Mr. Phantasm, Don Coscarelli, is a personal favorite. I saw the film during its original release down in Irvine. While wandering around the abandoned Rancho Los Amigos (Hollydale Hospital) in Downey, I came across a building that I knew, just knew, I had scene before.

Sure enough … Bubba Hot-Tep.

Later, while hiking in Malibu Creek State Park, I recognized another scene.

Film Location Comparison Shots:

Rancho Los Amigos is divided into the new facility and the old abandoned facility. It is worth a drive down to Downey to walk around the abandoned section. Please note most of the buildings are behind fences. This home was originally built for the superintendent Charles Manning in 1915. The building was later referred to as the Harriman House and eventually housed gerontology services.
