Astronaut Ellison Onizuka Street

When on your downtown Los Angeles walkabout, take time to pay your respects at the Space Shuttle Challenger Monument and Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Memorial in Little Tokyo. Onizuka was a Mission Specialist on the Space Shuttle Challenger’s tenth mission that took off from Kennedy Space Center at 11:38:00 EST on January 28, 1986. The shuttle disintegrated 73 seconds after launch killing all seven astronauts on board. The 1/10th scale model stands 27 feet and was designed, fabricated and assembled by the Scale Model Company. The Memorial monument was dedicated on October 19,1990 and refurbished in 2011.
